Electronic Health Records Specialist Program

Electronic Health Records on tablet

Electronic health records specialists are responsible for organizing and managing health information.  They ensure that the quality, accuracy, accessibility and security of health records are maintained. The National Healthcare Association lists the following as common tasks of an electronic health records specialist:

  • Audit patient records for compliance
  • Perform basic coding to submit reimbursement claims
  • Process Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Review patient records to ensure completion and accuracy
  • Collect patient demographic and insurance information
  • Discuss patient information with physicians and insurance professionals

Some of the data they maintain includes:

  • Patient information
  • Medical histories
  • Physician exams
  • Test results
  • Treatments provided
  • Services provided

Electronic health record specialists work in hospitals, physician’s offices, nursing homes and government facilities.  Some companies will allow electronic health record specialists to work from home. If working in a health care facility that is open twenty-four hours, there may be opportunities for weekend, evening and nightshift hours.

As the population ages, the need for more medical professionals is rising.  The need for electronic health records specialists is projected to increase 11% from 2018 to 2028 according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is much faster than average for all occupations.

Working with electronic health records gives you the opportunity to work in the medical field with other health professionals without having to perform direct patient care.  If you enjoy the thought of working in the medical field, but are unsure about working with patients, use your medical knowledge and organizational skills to become an electronic health records specialist today!
